Royal NLR joined the Hydrogen Europe Research organisation. This places Royal NLR at the heart of the European ecosystem that aims to realize the EU’s hydrogen strategy through innovation. An indispensable step on the road to climate-neutral aviation.

Being one of the two private members of the future Clean Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, Hydrogen Europe Research (HER) is a true pillar of the European hydrogen agenda. By joining HER, Royal NLR will contribute to the EU’s hydrogen strategy for a climate-neutral Europe through excellent research and innovation.

“NLR is fully committed to climate neutrality by 2050. Therefore, it is great news that we have been able to join at this early stage of the partnership”, states Michel Peters, CEO Royal NLR. The European Clean Hydrogen Partnership aims to accelerate the development and deployment of a European value chain for clean hydrogen technologies, contributing to sustainable, decarbonised and fully integrated energy systems, including a roadmap towards hydrogen for aviation.

This roadmap to climate-neutral aviation puts hydrogen at the centre as a low-carbon energy source

Peters: “This matches the vision of NLR as we foresee that hydrogen will play an important role in future aircraft. Next to that we recently published the roadmap Destination 2050 developed together with SEO Amsterdam Economics. This roadmap to climate-neutral aviation puts hydrogen at the centre as a low-carbon energy source next to other solutions to reach climate neutrality within the following thirty years”.

Next steps
On 17 December the first Governing Board of the Clean Hydrogen partnership will take place after which the long-term Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda will be executed through calls for proposals. Royal NLR, together with its new partners, intents to play a major role in a common ambition towards a climate-neutral continent in 2050.
