NLR and its Indian partner SHAKAT Aviation have signed a contract to carry out a Noise Study for Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. The contract has been awarded on June 19th 2012 by DGCA, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Government of India. The contract award was celebrated with a ceremony attended by officials of DGCA, the Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) and the European Union.
The project has been won on a highly competitive international playing field in close cooperation with SHAKAT Aviation from New Delhi. The Delhi noise study will pave the way for minimizing the annoyance due to aircraft noise around the airport. To this end, a fair and robust noise policy and enforcement system will need to be further developed. As a first step towards achieving this goal, the Delhi noise study is the first of its kind in India. The results are expected by the end of 2012.
Within the scope of this project, NLR will determine the aircraft noise load on communities surrounding Delhi Airport. Next, procedural and economic mitigation measures to minimise the annoyance will be proposed. The results will be used to recommend environmental policy measures, enforcement options, stakeholder information and participation possibilities.
The team will build on NLR’s decades of experience with Aircraft Noise and Air Traffic Management related to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and many other international airports, combined with SHAKAT Aviation’s knowledge on local circumstances. NLR is looking forward to build up a fruitful and long lasting cooperation with the Indian government and airport authorities to support them in achieving sustainable growth of the Indian air transport system.
