Sustainable aviation
In Europe, we are striving towards a climate-neutral society by 2050. The aviation industry plays an important role in this; the ambitions of the sector were set out in the Aviation Policy Memorandum and in Destination 2050. If climate neutral aviation is to become a reality, we need to commit to the development of radical innovations, at both the technological and societal level.
At a time when the urgency of a healthy balance between prosperity and well-being is becoming increasingly clear, a crucial question arises: can we transform aviation into a sustainable industry in time? There’s a lot going on in this area, but we need to stay alert. With the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address climate change, the aviation sector is under increasing pressure to reduce its environmental footprint. In addition to CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions, other effects also play an important role in climate change.
Henk van Dijk, Vice President of the Aerospace Operations division
‘Europe is committed to becoming a climate neutral society by 2050. The aviation sector has committed itself to contributing to this. This means that there is a need for radical innovations such as drastically reducing CO2 emissions, developing cleaner fuels and improving aircraft efficiency. NLR and partners are at the forefront of this ambition, as set out in the Dutch Aviation Note and Destination 2050 for the benefit of the European aviation sector’.
