RPAS safety

With over two decades of experience in accident investigation, safety management, safety regulation, and safety risk modelling, NLR possesses a unique blend of expertise to support the development and implementation of safe and effective unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) operations. Our team has served as policy and technical advisors to key international UAS working groups, including the ICAO RPAS Panel, JARUS, EUROCAE WG UAS, and the UAS WG of the Network of Analysts, providing us with a deep understanding of the global regulatory landscape.

We have also consulted on the development of State regulations for Unmanned Aircraft Systems, and have extensive experience with the EASA/JARUS Specific Operations Risk Assessment (SORA) process. Furthermore, we have developed a suite of risk models and tools to assess and mitigate the risks associated with UAS operations, and maintain a comprehensive database of over 10,000 UAS occurrences derived from public sources.

Our expertise extends to supporting safety studies for inspections of critical infrastructure, such as high-voltage power lines, using UAS, as well as assisting owners of vital infrastructure in establishing policies for dealing with UAS. Additionally, we have supported inspectors in developing methods for risk-based surveillance of UAS operators, ensuring that our clients receive comprehensive support for the safe and effective operation of UAS in various environments.

NLR can support you with:

  • Obtaining insight into hazards and risks associated with your UAS operations.
  • Understanding analysis of operational and safety data on UAS operations.
  • Performing a Specific Operational Risk Assessment (SORA).
  • Demonstrating safe operation of your UAS in an urban environment.
  • Ensuring your U-Space services are sufficiently safe for operational use.
  • Obtaining approval from the authority for your UAS operation in the specific category.
  • Conducting inspections of vital infrastructure with UAS, such as power lines and bridges.
  • Establishing a tailored safety management system for your UAS organisation.
  • Enhancing analysis of UAS incidents and accidents in your occurrence reporting system.
  • Conducting efficient and effective risk based surveillance of UAS operators in your state.
