Frederik Mohrmann, active in NLR’s department for training and simulation, recently won the 2015 Best Paper Award for his publication in the Journal of Aviation Psychology and Applied Human Factors (APAHF), co-authored by his thesis supervisors Arjan Lemmers and John Stoop. The APAHF journal is a joint publication of the European Association for Aviation Psychology (EAAP) and the Australian Aviation Psychology Association (AAVPA).
The paper is the result of Frederik’s MSc thesis graduation project at NLR. Using extremely realistic simulation tests on NLR’s GRACE flight simulator, his research demonstrated a systemic link between pilots’ (knowledge-driven) decision-making in highly automated aircraft, and the resulting quantified level of flight safety. The study was performed at NLR’s AOTS department (Aerospace Operations Training & Simulation) and AOCF department (Aerospace Operations Cockpit & Flight Operations), as part of the EU-funded Man4Gen project.
Frederik’s findings were tested and incorporated into the Man4Gen solutions, and were praised by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for their applicability and relevance. Furthermore, they have been well received at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines training, and have been presented at the 2014 AAVPA Conference in Australia.
The Man4Gen team is very happy with the impact of this EU-sponsored study, and expects that NLR will be able to further distinguish itself through innovations that will resonate well with today’s challenges in commercial flight operations and training.
The Best Paper Award was presented to Frederik Mohrmann at the EAAP conference in Lisbon in September, where he was also invited as a keynote speaker (see http://conference.eaap.net/speakers.html).
