Certification support

NLR has a proven track record in supporting our customers in developing their
system in a realistic environment, from experimental to production stages (TRL 5-7), as well as qualifying and certifying your product for aeronautical use (TRL 7-9). We understand the process to be followed to reach a certified product, in compliance with the appropriate flight safety requirements. We can also assist in interpreting requirements, in designing aircraft modifications to integrate new capabilities, up to new aircraft types, and provide any necessary support in the airworthiness certification domain, helping you navigate the complex process of bringing your product to market.

NLR can support you with

  • Extensive capabilities and expertise in the field of airworthiness certification of civil and military aircraft systems, flight simulators, aircraft modifications, or new aircraft developments, for both fixed wing and helicopters and UAS.
  • Holding an accredited design organisation (a national civil DOA, based on EASA Part21 guidelines and a national Military Aviation Requirement 21 accreditation) with specialised design engineers in various fields of expertise, followed up with independent verification through independent Compliance Verification Engineers (CVEs).
  • Designing aircraft systems, including requirements management and traceability.
  • Defining and detailing the certification basis and the acceptable means of compliance for airworthiness certification. Embedding customer functional requirements.
  • Drafting of a certification plan, including planning and liaison processes.
  • Conducting (preliminary) System Safety Assessments in accordance with civil or military standards.
  • Conducting various compliance proving activities per the Certification Plan.
  • Creating certification reports, including gathering required compliance and substantiating data.
  • Independent Verification and validation of designs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Supporting Certification Review Items discussions on non-compliances to the requirements (mitigations). Defining operational restrictions that may apply.
  • Supporting the Military Type Certificate Date Sheets preparation and activities for the Military Type Certificate application.

To support certification process and activities NLR developed a Certification Management Application (CMA).
