Impact on structures

NLR has extensive capabilities to model and simulate various types of impact events, including low and high-velocity impacts, and assess their consequences on damaged structures. Our expertise includes specific knowledge of impact on thick composite components. We also have in-house models for drones and a validated bird impact model, allowing us to predict damage initiation and propagation in different materials and aircraft structures, including metals and composites.

Our testing facilities enable us to reproduce impact events, while our non-destructive technologies allow us to visualise and quantify impact damage. We also provide safety assessments of flight and third-party risks, as well as policy support in identifying risks and setting acceptable levels of safety.

NLR can support you with:

  • Investigating the consequences of external/foreign object impacts and damages (FOD) on structures, such as hail, runway debris, birds, or drones
  • Assessing the frangibility of airfield structures against aircraft impacts
  • Determining the extent of damage caused by impacts on composite or metal structures
  • Evaluating the effects of broken propellers or high-velocity shrapnel due to compressor failure
  • Assessing damage tolerance of impacted components for certification purposes, including compliance with EASA and FAA regulations
  • Specific knowledge of impact on thick composite components and metal (lattice) structures
